Medan. 2025 This study discusses the use of affixation in the formation of medical vocabulary, based on data collected from the Dictionary of Medical Terms by Peter Collin (2004). This research has used a qualitative descriptive method. The analysis is grounded in the morphological framework proposed by Katamba and Stonham (2006), which categorizes affixation into four types—prefixation, suffixation, infixation and multiple affixation, and draws on McCarthy’s (2018) classification of affixation processes into class changing and class maintaining. The findings reveal that only prefixation and suffixation are productively used in the medical terms analyzed, while infixation does not appear. The most frequent prefixes identified include dis-, re-, and un-, while commonly occurring suffixes include - ed, -ly, and -er. The study also notes several instances of multiple affixation, highlighting the morphological complexity of medical vocabulary. From the perspective of process, most affixation observed falls under class changing, such as verb-to-noun derivation. These findings emphasize the significant role of affixation in enriching and shaping the structure of English medical terms.
