SLANG WORDS IN DUA LIPA’S RADICAL OPTIMISM ALBUM LYRICS
XMLThis thesis investigates the use of slang words in Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism album lyrics.
The objectives of this study are to identify the types of slang words and to analyze their
meanings within the context of the songs. The data were collected from eleven selected songs,
namely End of an Era, Houdini, Training Season, These Walls, Whatcha Doing, French Exit,
Illusion, Falling Forever, Anything for Love, Maria, and Happy for You. A total of 71 instances
of slang words were identified in the lyrics. This research employs a qualitative descriptive
method to classify the slang words into four types based on their linguistic characteristics: fresh
and creative, flippant, imitative, and clipping. The findings show that Dua Lipa frequently uses
slang words to create casual, relatable, and emotionally expressive lyrics. Each type of slang
serves a specific communicative function, such as demonstrating creativity, conveying casual
or humorous attitudes, imitating cultural expressions, or shortening words for stylistic and
rhythmic purposes. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the use of informal
language in contemporary pop music and provides insights into linguistic creativity in song
lyrics.
