THE STRUGGLES OF THE MAJOR CHARACTER IN LEWIS CARROLL’S ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND
XMLThis research discusses the struggles of Alice, the main character in Lewis Carroll’s novel
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The aim of this study is to describe Alice’s difficulties in (1)
understanding herself, (2) behaving like an adult person, and (3) living in the adult world. The
method used in this research is qualitative descriptive, with the data taken from the novel itself.
The findings show that Alice has many difficulties in understanding who she really is. Her body
changes, her memory becomes unclear, and her encounters with strange creatures make her
doubt her identity. Alice also faces problems when she tries to act like an adult. Even though she
gives advice to herself and tries to think logically, she often fails and still acts like a child. In
addition, Alice struggles with the rules and authority in Wonderland, which represent the adult
world. These rules are confusing and unfair, so she cannot live in them easily.
From these findings, it can be concluded that Alice’s journey shows the identity crisis of a child
who is in the transition toward adulthood. Her story reflects how children often feel confused and
lost before they can finally find a clearer sense of self.
