METAPHORS IN BRUNO MARS’ SELECTED SONG LYRICS

XML

This study analyzes the use of conceptual metaphors in the selected song lyrics of Bruno Mars,
based on the theoretical framework of George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. The research aims to
identify and classify the types of metaphors used, as well as to analyze their meanings and
contributions to the overall themes and emotional impact of the songs. Using a qualitative
descriptive method, the study examines ten popular songs, including "Grenade," "Just the Way
You Are," and "When I Was Your Man." The findings reveal 48 conceptual metaphors,
consisting of 27 ontological metaphors, 11 structural metaphors, and 10 orientational
metaphors. The dominance of ontological metaphors indicates Bruno Mars's tendency to
concretize abstract emotions and experiences into tangible entities, thereby enhancing listener
comprehension and emotional connection. The strategic combination of these metaphor types
enriches the lyrical narrative, transforming personal experiences into universal expressions.
This research highlighting the significant role of figurative language in popular music.
