Sijabat, Lulu Ribka Roito. Women’s Language Features in Social Media: A
Case Study on Rihanna’s Instagram® Captions and Comments. A Thesis.
Faculty of Letters. Universitas Methodist Indonesia. Medan. 2026.
Women’s language reflects linguistic characteristics commonly associated with
emotional expression, politeness, and interpersonal communication. The research
aims to identify the types of women’s language features and explain the recurring
linguistic patterns found in Instagram® captions and comments on Rihanna’s
Instagram® account (@badgalriri). The research addresses two problems: (1)
What types of women’s language features appear in Rihanna’s Instagram®
captions and comments? and (2) What linguistic patterns emerge from their use in
social media interaction? The research applies Robin Lakoff’s (2004) theory of
women’s language features using a descriptive qualitative research design. The
data consist of written captions and comments collected from Rihanna’s
Instagram® posts during 2025–2026. The data were analyzed through
identification, classification, and interpretation of linguistic features. The findings
reveal nine types of women’s language features, namely lexical hedges, tag
questions, empty adjectives, intensifiers, superpolite forms, hypercorrect
grammar, avoidance of strong swear words, emphatic stress, and precise colour
terms. These features form recurring linguistic patterns characterized by
emotional expressiveness, politeness, and audience engagement. The study
concludes that women’s language on Instagram® functions as a strategy for
expressing identity and maintaining social relationships in digital communication.
Keywords: Women’s Language Features, Sociolinguistics, Instagram®,
