ABSTRACT
Barus, Kevin Gideon, Cooperative Principle Found in ‘Cars’ Movie Script by John Lasseter. A Thesis. Fakultas Sastra. Universitas Methodist Indonesia. Medan. 2024.
The purpose of this study is to undertake a complete analysis of the cooperative principle expressed through conversation in the ‘Cars’ movie script. The writer employs Grice’s theory from Gerald Gazdar to identify the 4 maxims present in the utterances provided in the ‘Cars’ movie script. The outcomes of this study are expected to aid in the understanding of conversational implicature and its impact on speaker and listener perceptions. By analysing these utterances, the writer hopes to gain a better understanding of the non-directly conveyed utterances that exist in society today, as well as how these utterances are communicated to society through ordinary language. In the ‘Cars’ movie script by John Lasseter, the writer found 20 utterances that contained the 4 maxims. Namely maxim of manner, maxim of relevance, maxim of quality and maxim of quantity. These findings will be presented in the form of percentages below. Maxim of Manner out of 5 utterances analysed, 40% follow the maxim of manner, and 60% violate it, Maxim of Relevance out of 8 utterances analysed, 62.5% follow the maxim of relevance, and 37.5% violate it, Maxim of Quality out of 3 utterances analysed, 100% follow the maxim of quality, Maxim of Quantity out of 4 utterances analysed, 25% follow the maxim of quantity, and 75% violate it. And in second problem there are 20 meanings called sentence meanings and utterance meanings, in the ‘Cars’ movie script the writer found 12 sentence meanings and 8 utterance meanings. Sentence meanings: 60% of the meanings identified are sentence meanings and Utterance meanings 40% of the meanings identified are utterance meanings.
