ABSTRACT Sijabat, Nonia Rosari. Figurative Language in Rafael Sitorus' Selected Song Lyrics. Thesis: The Faculty of Letters, Methodist Indonesia, 2021. The objectives of this research were to find out the types of figurative language in Rafael Sitorus selected lyrics and to find out the types of meanings in Rafael Sitorus’ selected lyrics. There were five songs of Rafael Sitorus chosen to be the source of data, namely; Tinggal Kenangan, Dang Mungkin, Huhaholongi, Ho Do Na Huparsitta, Dang Martading Hata, Huhorom Pe Siholhi, Aha Do Salahku, to collect the data, the lyrics were written down while listening to the song frequently and searched on the website. This research used qualitative research. The method is used in this research was document or content analysis. The data analysis the data by using the theory by Thomas and Shan (2000: 87) was conducted by data preparation, data reading, data coding, data classification, and data calculating. In this research, the researchers used the data triangulation as a technique of checking the validation of the data. The result showed that the total of analysis was 27 data of figurative languages in the song lyrics of Rafael Sitorus. There were 3 data of irony, 2 data of metonymy, 3 data of synecdoche, 5 data of hyperbole, 7 data of paradox, 3 data of apostrophe, 2 data of litotes, 2 data of simile and 1 data of personification. The most dominant types of figurative language in song lyrics of Rafael Sitorus was paradox which represents (25.0%) of whole data, followed by irony (10.7%), metonymy (7.14%), synecdoche (10.7%), hyperbole (17.8%), paradox (25.0%), apostrophe (10.7%), litotes (7.14%), simile (7.14%) and personification (3.57%).
