This thesis discusses about conflicts faced by the main characters in the Sinking of Van Der Wijck Movie by Buya Hamka. The aims of the study are to find out (1) the kinds of internal and external conflicts and (2) the factors that cause of the conflicts. The writer uses theory of conflict due to analyze the main character’s conflicts. This thesis uses descriptive qualitative method to describe the main characters. Furthermore, the writer uses William Kenney theory to analyze the kinds of internal and external conflicts and Nugriyantoro theory to analyze factors of conflict faced by the main characters. The study found several results based on the aims. There are two kinds of internal conflict, orphanage and depression that caused by the illness of the main character’s parent and the love each of the main characters have. In addition, there are two kinds of external conflicts different culture and different taste or interest that cause by the different goals, powers and customs the main characters have.
