ABSTRACT Manosmitta, Nishari. Compound Words in Robert James Waller’s Novel The Bridges of Madison County. A Thesis. Department of English Language and Literature. Fakultas Sastra. Universitas Methodist Indonesia. Medan. 2021. This research is purposed to find the types of compound words based on Booij theory and to investigate processes of compound words based on Delahunty and Garvey theory. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method approach. The data are all compound words taken from The Bridges of Madison County novel. In collecting the data, the writer reading the novel, marking the compound words, listing the compound words and classifying the compound words based on the types and the processes. In analysis the data, the writer collecting the data, classifying the data into the types and the processes, identifying the data, rechecking all the data, and finally describing the data. The result of this research indicates there are 3 types of compound words used in The Bridges of Madison County novel. There are endocentric compound words which have the modifier and the head words, exocentric compound words which semantic head is not explicitly expressed, and copulative compound words which the head dominates the entire word. Also, there are 4 processes of compound words used in The Bridges of Madison County novel. There are noun compound words that comes from noun, verb, adjective and adverb combines with noun, verb compound words that comes from noun, verb, adjective and adverb combines with verb, adjective compound words that comes from noun, verb, adjective, adverb combines with adjective, and adverb compound words that comes from noun, verb, adjective and adverb combines with adverb.
