ABSTRACT

Linda. Hegemonic Masculinity in Children’s literature: The Adventures of Tom
Sawyer Novel by Mark Twain. Thesis: Department of English Language and
Literature. Fakultas Sastra, Universitas Methodist Indonesia Medan 2021.

This research is conducted in order to analyze the kinds of hegemonic
masculinity depictions shown in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer novel by Mark
Twain and the impacts of hegemonic masculinity depictions found in it. The scope
of the study will only be hegemonic masculinity found in the children’s literature.
The writer uses the descriptive qualitative method and gender theory by R.W.
Connel to analyze it. The writer chooses children’s literature as the source of data
because it is one of the most-read books by young readers in the hope that the result
will later be useful for the educators and parents to be considered and linked with
the teaching. The writer finds that the kinds of hegemonic masculinity displayed in
the novel are toxic masculinity, bad boy archetype, and dominant-submissive roles.
The writer also finds the impacts that are resulted from the depiction of hegemony
on The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer's novel which are bad role model imitation,
bullying, and unhealthy habit to hide feelings. Young readers will begin to see
mischievous, manipulating, and aggressive behavior as a common thing to do or
even should be done.
