<note>ABSTRACT

Felim, Elvi. Derivational and Inflectional Affixes in Edgar Allan Poe’s Short Story The Black Cat. A Thesis. Department of English Language and Literature. Faculty of Letters. Universitas Methodist Indonesia. Medan. 2021.

This research is purposed to analyze three problems, types of derivational affixes, types of inflectional affixes and processes of derivational and inflectional affixes based on Lieber, Staucker, and Bauer theory. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method approach. The result of this research indicated that there are two types of derivational affixes in Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Black Cat short story, there are eight types of inflectional affixes in The Black Cat short story, and there are four processes of derivational and inflectional affixes in The Black Cat short story. The writer found 8 data categorized into class maintaining derivational, 27 data categorized into class changing derivational, and 20 data categorized into plural inflectional, 2 data categorized into possessive inflectional, 1 data categorized into comparative inflectional, 5 data categorized into present inflectional, 41 data categorized into past inflectional, 22 data categorized into past participle inflectional, 16 data categorized into present participle inflectional. The writer also found 26 data categorized into Noun formations, 79 data categorized into Verb formations, 13 data categorized into Adjective formations, and 24 data categorized into Adverb formations.
